During the official visit to Australia, Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Finance Mr. Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Secretary of Department of Foreign Affairs and Commerce, Prof. Michelle Chan.

The meeting discussed the strategic importance of digital transformation in Sri Lanka and the need to improve collaboration by exchanging resources with Australia to further that sector.

Cyber security, data centers, AI data centers, and data embassies (Data Embassies) as collaboration opportunities between the two parties were focused. These are essential for strengthening digital productivity, data security and national data autonomy in Sri Lanka.

Also, the department also discussed programs that can be implemented together with the aim of improving AI literacy and skills, especially among students and the public. This will lead to the future generations of Sri Lanka and the younger generation to create a nourished future with the power of AI.

The meeting continued strong collaboration and relationship between Sri Lanka and Australia to advance the digital future.

During his official visit to Australia, Hon. the Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eranga Weeraratne, met with Ms. Michelle Chan, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) of Australia.

The discussion focused on the strategic importance of Sri Lanka’s digital transformation and the potential to deepen collaboration with Australia through shared expertise and resources.

Both sides explored key areas of partnership, including cybersecurity, data centers, AI data centers, and data embassies, all vital components for enhancing Sri Lanka’s digital productivity, data security, and national data sovereignty.

They also discussed joint initiatives aimed at building AI literacy and practical capabilities among students and the wider public, empowering the next generation to lead in an AI-driven future.

This meeting further strengthened the partnership between Sri Lanka and Australia in advancing a secure, inclusive, and innovative digital future.

Hon, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Mr. Eranga Weeraratne, during his official visit to Australia, met Dr. Andrew Charlton, Assistant Minister of Science, Technology and Digital Economy.

The discussion focused on the important role of digitalization in leading economic and social transformation in Sri Lanka. The Deputy Minister of the Sri Lankan Government's strategic priorities and continuous initiatives to speed up digital public infrastructure, nurture innovations, and enhance digital inclusion across all sectors.

The Hon. Dr. Charlton shared a valuable insight into Australia's digital transformation framework, where he explained facts about overall state access, technology policies control, and strong state-private collaboration in advancing the digital economy.

The department shared ideas on opportunities in close bilateral collaboration in key sectors such as capability growth, digital policy development, digital infrastructure, cyber security and AI control.

The collaboration to utilize technology for an inclusive digital development in Sri Lanka and Australia all marked another forward step to strengthen digital collaboration among the two countries that were reaffirmed.

Hon. Dr. Charlton shared valuable insights into Australia’s digital transformation framework, highlighting its whole-of-government approach, technology policy governance, and strong public–private collaboration in advancing the digital economy.

Both parties recognized the potential for closer bilateral cooperation in key areas, including capacity building, digital policy development, digital infrastructure, cybersecurity, and AI governance.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of Sri Lanka and Australia to harness technology for inclusive development and marked another step forward in strengthening digital collaboration between the two nations.

GovPay, the national digital payment platform in Sri Lanka, is playing a major role in leading the government's digital transformation. As of today, the platform has exceeded Rs.350 million, connecting 160+ state institutions, and providing 2,400+ citizen services to accept online payments seamlessly.

This milestone is an achievement of collectiveism and many states that have partnered with us to make digital payments a reality for Digital Finance Ministry, Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA), LankaPay, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, all licensed banks, financial technology institutions and all citizens A collective effort from the institutions.

The Sydney Investor Forum, organized by the Sri Lanka and the Australian Chamber of Commerce (SLACC) together with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Sri Lanka General Commissioner's Office, as an attractive destination for Australian investors and technology companies. Investors, tech leaders and policymakers gathered at one place to explore opportunities to build Sri Lanka.

Over the past three years, Sri Lanka's digital ecosystem has shown rapid growth and innovation, new opportunities across multiple sectors. The forum discussed the misconceptions about doing business in Sri Lanka. Also emphasized here on the strong policies and investment reforms introduced to foster innovation, entrepreneurship and border collaboration.

Here is the government-led keynote speakers including Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, President Chief Advisor on Digital Economy and President of the IT Representative Dr. Hans Vijayasuriya to strengthen government reforms, initiatives for digital infrastructure and strengthen investment trust Explained about the forest scheme and the incentives designed to accelerate digital transformation.

On 10th October in Sydney, the Sydney Investor Forum, organized by the Sri Lanka and Australia Chamber of Commerce (SLACC) in collaboration with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Sri Lankan High Commission, brought together investors, tech leaders, and policymakers to explore why Sri Lanka is emerging as an attractive destination for Australian investors and technology firms.

Over the past three years, Sri Lanka’s digital ecosystem has demonstrated rapid growth and innovation, with new opportunities unfolding across multiple sectors. The forum addressed key misconceptions about doing business in Sri Lanka and highlighted the strong policy and investment reforms introduced to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and cross-border collaboration.

At the event, keynote speakers, Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, and Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy and Chairman of ICTA, highlighted the government’s digital reforms, infrastructure development initiatives, and programs aimed at boosting investor confidence and accelerating digital transformation in Sri Lanka.

The Investor Forum on Sri Lanka's Digital Economic Growth (Investor Forum) successfully held yesterday (2025 October) in Melbourne, Australia, according to the government's vision to make the Sri Lanka's economy a digitally powered economy by 2030.

More than 70 people including government representatives, industry owners, regulatory institutions, university professors and investors attended the event.

The forum was organized by the Sri Lanka Representative Office in Melbourne, conducted by the Australian Ministry of Foreign and Trade (DFAT). Here also welcomed the Sri Lankan delegation who came under the Canberra Studies Programme (Canberra Fellowship Programme – CFP) for Digital Transformation and Economic Effectivity.

Addressing the occasion, Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne, explained the scheme to build Sri Lanka $15 billion as a digital economy by 2030. There also emphasized the need to handle the digital economy in this country on growing aspects of innovation, and growing aspects.

Also commenting here, Dr. Hans Vijayasuriya, President Senior Consultant and President of IT Representative on Digital Economy, explained the purpose of digital broadcasting of 5 towers in Sri Lanka and the importance of digital transformation through corporate strengthening.

Accordingly, Peter Ward, manager of Digital Teams (Digital Teams), sharing his experience of investment in Sri Lanka, showed that Sri Lanka is a more suitable and capable country for digital and economic partnerships.

At the end of the day, Hon'ble Deputy Minister Eranga Weeraratne, Dr. Hans Vijayasuriya, Prof. Shanika Karunasekara (University of Melbourne) and Shehani Seneviratne (SLASSCOM President) participated in the discussion on “Investing in Asia’s Next Digital Frontier”.

There, Sri Lanka had more discussions about the practical techniques of establishing Asia's digital innovation and investment hub.

Investor Forum for ‘Digital Economy Growth of Sri Lanka' held in Melbourne In line with Sri Lanka’s vision to become a digitally empowered economy by 2030, an Investor Forum on the Digital Economy Growth of Sri Lanka was successfully held in Melbourne, Australia. The event brought together a diverse audience of over 70 participants, including government officials, industry leaders, regulators, academics, and potential investors.

Organised by the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne and hosted by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), the forum welcomed the Sri Lankan delegation attending the Canberra Fellowship Programme (CFP) on Digital Transformation for Resilience and Prosperity

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, outlined Sri Lanka’s strategic roadmap to build a US$15 billion digital economy by 2030, emphasizing inclusive access, digital literacy, and innovation-led growth. He was joined by Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy and Chairman of ICTA, Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, who highlighted Sri Lanka’s fivefold digital expansion goals and the importance of institutional strengthening to drive transformation.

The forum also featured insights from Victoria’s Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions, where Ashling James, Director of Digital Economy and Innovation Policy, underscored the state’s commitment to digital collaboration with Sri Lanka. Peter Ward, Managing Director of Dijital Teams, shared his success story of investing in Sri Lanka, reaffirming the nation’s strong potential for digital and economic partnerships.

The event concluded with a dynamic panel discussion on Investing in Asia’s Next Digital Frontier, featuring Hon. Eranga Weeraratne, Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Prof. Shanika Karunasekara (University of Melbourne), and Shehani Seneviratne (Chairperson, SLASSCOM), focusing on strategies to position Sri Lanka as a regional hub for digital innovation and investment.

Today (October 3, 2025), the announcement (Notice of Assignment – NoA) about the final assignment of 5G required for the 2025 Frequency Auction was published. Honorable Deputy Minister of Digital Finance Eranga Weerarathana; Acting Secretary of Digital Finance Ministry, Chairman of Electric Forms Regulation Commission, Varuna Dhanapala; Director General Bandula Herath of Electric Forms Regulation Commission; Chairman of 5G Auction Committee, Director General of Finance Ministry, Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardhana, The Director of the Electricity Regulation Commission Saint Gunanandana participated.

Respected Deputy Minister of Digital Economy commented here; that the final assignment will lay a powerful foundation for expanding the new generation phone and information communication services, especially 5G technology, Sri Lanka's economy, innovation and industrial growth. He also showed that this is a key pathway for Sri Lanka's economy, innovation and industrial growth.

Also through fast internet facilities, low delay communication services and new technical infrastructure, key industries such as medical, education, agriculture and garment can give new life, for example, increasing crops and reducing resource waste using smart sensors in agriculture, in the garment industry He also said that it can be useful to increase quality and production capacity through automation systems.

Notice of Assignment (NoA) for the 2025 5G spectrum auction.

A special media briefing was held today (October 3, 2025) at the Information and Communication Technology Agency to announce the Final Assignment Notice (NoA) related to the 2025 5G Frequency Auction. The event was graced by the Hon. Deputy Minister of Digital Economy, Eng. Eranga Weeraratne, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy & Chairman of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL) Mr. Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Director General of Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Bandula Herath, Chairman of the 5G Auction Committee and Director General of Ministry of Finance, Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena, and Director of TRCSL Mr. Shantha Gunanandana.

During the briefing, it was highlighted that the introduction of 5G technology will lay a strong foundation for the expansion of Sri Lanka’s telecommunications landscape. 5G will act as a key driver of economic growth, innovation, and industrial development, enabling transformative progress across multiple sectors. Faster internet speeds, ultra-low latency, and cutting-edge digital infrastructure are expected to unlock new opportunities in education, agriculture, environmental management, and manufacturing. For example, in agriculture, the use of smart technologies will help increase yields and minimize resource waste, while automated systems in manufacturing will boost productivity and efficiency.
